Modern day woman and man conversing at a well

7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” 11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?” (John 4:7-12)

Often in biblical history, a meeting at a well was the beginning of a relationship that led to marriage. Abraham's servant found Rebekah for Isaac, Jacob met Rachel, and Moses met Zipporah - each at a well, each was followed by marriage. When Jesus met the Samaritan woman at a well, their interaction followed a similar pattern. He'd traveled from another region, there was a discussion about drawing water, and the woman then ran to tell others about the man she'd met. In the other instances, water was actually drawn: Rebekah drew water for Abraham's servant and his camels, Jacob drew water for Rachel and her father's sheep, and Moses drew water for Zipporah, her sisters and their camels. Jesus, however, did not receive the water he requested. Instead, he offered the Samaritan woman living water (himself). Much like Nicodemus misunderstood Jesus' admonition to be born again, the woman did not understand what Jesus was offering her. She thought Jesus could supply her with running water so she would no longer need to draw from the well. Yet, where Nicodemus' confusion caused him to go away in contemplation, the woman immediately placed her faith in Jesus despite

(or, maybe, because of) her misunderstanding.

While this is not the meet cute of our romance comedies, Jesus is definitely the bridegroom. He's presenting himself ready and willing to supply what we truly need - the quenching of our eternal thirst, a covenant relationship with our redeemer and savior, and the opportunity to bear witness to the world about the One whose abundant love turns no one away. We can all say "I do" to that!

8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11 Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

(Romans 5:8-11)
